Leeds United will open talks with Kemar Roofe over a new contract in the new year, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim the Championship giants plan to begin discussions with the in-form forward “after Christmas” as they look to tie him down to a new deal to replace his current agreement, which expires in 18 months.

The Mirror report manager Marcelo Bielsa is “delighted” with Roofe’s form this season and has given the green light for the club to secure a settlement with one of the club’s outstanding players this season.

The devil is in the detail. And, as far as the United hierarchy are concerned, the flashing red horns are apparent in the report that Roofe wants to be catapulted into the top bracket of earners at the club. It is not stated what is the magic figure for Leeds’ biggest earner, although it was widely reported in the summer that Bielsa agreed to a £40,000-a-week deal when making the shock move to the English Championship. There has been some speculation that Patrick Bamford – behind Roofe in the centre-forward pecking order at Elland Road – was handed a deal worth around £30,000-a-week when he joined from Middlesbrough. Roofe is likely to start negotiations at around or above that figure and Leeds might have to pay it if they are to hang on to a player who looks capable of following former teammate Chris Wood into the Premier League. Growing interest in him from the elite is inevitable following the improvements in his game under Bielsa this season.
