Leeds United will be looking to sign a goalkeeper in the January window but are seeking a back up option rather than someone who will take the place in the starting XI in the second half of the season, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Sun writer, who has proven himself to be a reliable reporter when it comes to transfer dealings, made the significant revelation about the Whites’ hunt for a new shot stopper on his personal Twitter account, with manager Marcelo Bielsa having just one option at his disposal with any serious first team experience right now.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell has been the club’s number one for the majority of this season and with Jamal Blackman picking up a season-ending injury, youngster Will Huffer was handed his debut in the senior stars’ absence.

Opinion

Bringing someone who would expect to be a starter from their arrival at Elland Road threatens to upset the apple cart in the senior side and as such Bielsa is doing the right thing by seeking a back up option. There is never any guarantee that a goalkeeper is going to carry out their duties as expected when arriving at a new club and with Bailey Peacock-Farrell already proving himself on a weekly basis it would be a serious gamble to axe him in favour of a new signing. As for who Bielsa targets, he has to find someone who is happy to sit on the bench and bide their time for a shot at first team action. Anyone with any experience is going to be seeking game time and so it is likely that someone either cast out at their current club or is on the fringes of the team will be the one to make the move to Leeds. There are a number of options to consider and so making a decision will be a tough task for Bielsa and his transfer team.
