Leeds United are dragging their heels over a new contract for Kemar Roofe after initially planning to open talks in October, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The newspaper claim the Championship giants have yet to open formal talks with the forward and no offers have been made about an extension to a deal that expires in the summer of 2020.

The YEP report Leeds are vulnerable to losing Roofe like they did with Chris Wood at the start of last season after his goal-drenched 2016-17 campaign.

OPINION

The Roofe contract situation is a major issue that needs addressing from Leeds. The hierarchy’s failure to take any meaningful action amid reports that contract talks for all players have been shelved suggests the club have run out of collateral and are waiting to see how their season pans out before sanctioning lucrative contracts. If that’s the case, Leeds are taking a massive risk. Roofe is emerging as the club’s most valuable asset on the back of a campaign in which he is on course to fly past his 14-goal tally of last season in January. With 10 goals from 16 Championship appearances this season, the former Oxford United man is the dangerman-in-chief who is doing what Wood did so brilliantly two seasons ago before earning a £15million transfer to Burnley. Leeds are taking a risk on losing Roofe next summer if his contract situation remains the same, especially as the YEP report he is on a relatively low salary compared to the squad’s top earners.
