Albert Adomah is set to be handed a new long term deal with Aston Villa, just months after being put up for a free transfer by former manager Steve Bruce.

According to reports from TEAMtalk, the winger will be rewarded for his good work under new boss Dean Smith with a lengthy new contract at Villa Park.

Despite a stellar season last term, registering 15 goals and picking up the Villains’ Player of the Year accolade, the 30-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements by Bruce and came close to joining former club Middlesbrough on a Bosman. The deal fell through, however, when Boro refused to offer Adomah anything longer than a year-long deal.

Since Smith has taken the helm at Villa Park, the Ghanian has seen his first team opportunities improve drastically, and he has reestablished himself as a key member of his new manager’s side.

OPINION

It’s always a little bit mystifying when a club is willing to allow one of their best players to leave, but it’s especially baffling when they’re willing to let them go for nothing. Adomah has been a huge hit at Villa Park since joining from Middlesbrough in 2016. Pacy and direct, he is in many ways the quintessential Championship winger, and was excellent last season as he finished with 15 goals to become Villa’s top scorer. Why Steve Bruce chose to phase him out of his plans is really anybody’s guess, and if the former boss had had his way then the Ghanian would currently be tearing things up on Teeside rather than in the Midlands. Thankfully for Villa fans, Adomah stuck around, and ever since Dean Smith took charge, he has looked a lot like the player that set the league alight last term. In many ways, Adomah is emblematic of the transformation that Smith is slowly performing at Villa Park, as players that stagnated under Bruce begin to recapture the form that took them so close to promotion last time around.
