Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley was not at his side’s home clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers as he is currently overseas, according to Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe

The British businessman revealed in an interview with Sky earlier this week that, with the club having been up for sale for over a year, the possibility of a takeover was at a more advanced stage than it ever had been, amid rumours of bids being tabled by numerous foreign investors.

However he was a notable absence at St James’ Park as the Magpies took on Wolves, with Sky commentator Hinchcliffe revealing where he was.

He said on Sky Sports’ coverage of the clash at St James’ Park (16:11, 09/12): “Mike Ashley not here by the way, we understand he is overseas.”

Opinion

It is a shame that Hinchcliffe did not reveal more about where the Newcastle owner was, for it could have handed the Toon Army a much clearer idea of what was happening behind the scenes in terms of a takeover. The British tycoon is obviously not going to take part in face to face talks every day and much of the negotiations – if there are any of course – will be done by his representatives. However, if things were close then he would probably be in the UK to finalise a deal and considering he is abroad, the fans should not get too excited. Alternatively, he could be holding business talks with any number of foreign investors and so the news of where he is might actually bring a bit of hope. Either way, it gives the supporters a clearer idea of just what Ashley is up to at this crucial time for the club. Time will tell whether his overseas visit had anything to do with the Magpies.
