Rangers are expected to continue their recruitment strategy of the summer into the January window as the club jet out to scout AEK Athens’ clash with Panathanaikos on Saturday, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Gers had scouts in place to watch the Athens derby in Greek’s top flight, a match which ended 0-0, and were joined by a number of clubs from across Europe in watching on.

It is stated that Steven Gerrard is set to push to sign more new players despite 15 arrivals over the summer window and that a new striker could be top of the list after the disappointing performances of Umar Sadiq.

Opinion

It seems as though Ibrox will be welcoming at least one new face through the door in the winter window but will it be from either of the Greek sides? Only time will tell, but it would prove to be quite the coup if the Gers could pull off a capture from AEK Athens, with the Greek giants fighting it out in the Champions League – albeit currently sitting at the bottom of a difficult group including Bayern Munich, Ajax and Benfica, the former winning the German title and the latter pair finishing as runners up in their respective divisions last season. Has the Gerrard revolution got enough momentum behind it to convince players to make the ‘drop’ in competition and try to help Rangers hit the next level? It is only six months into the campaign and while they might be impressing on the continent their domestic displays show they are still some way behind Celtic. Players want more than just European football – they want to be challenging for titles, and Gerrard would need to do a lot of convincing to get any players from Athens to make the move to Ibrox.
