A section of football fans on Twitter have torn West Ham chairman David Gold to shreds for his comments on the £5million ‘gift’ that will be given to departing Premier League chief Richard Scudamore.

As shown in a clip by BBC journalist Dan Roan via his personal Twitter account, Gold has claimed that Scudamore “deserves everything he gets” and that critics are “looking for trouble”.

It is a decision that has sparked fury among the great majority of football fans, and some Twitter users have leaped onto social media to slam Gold for his backing of the golden handshake.

COMMENTARY:

These football fans have every right to be furious with Gold because these comments just go to show how self-absorbed and out of touch the owners of Premier League clubs are. Does it not sound absolutely ridiculous what they are doing? They are giving a rich man a lot of money for what is essentially a retirement gift. Meanwhile there are still Premier League clubs that pay their staff less than the minimum living wage, grassroots football is a state and many football supporters turn up to every single one of their clubs’ games up and down the country even though they struggle to afford it. It is an absolute joke and fans on Twitter are fuming for good reason. Gold is not the only Premier League chairman to have backed this decision. Bruce Buck needs to face the music because it was his idea. Gold, at the moment, was just the first man to speak out about it.
