West Brom have started talks with Rekeem Harper over a new contract, according to the Express & Star.

The newspaper claims that the 18-year-old’s current terms expire at the end of the season and Albion do not want to lose him for a “minimal tribunal fee” next summer.

Harper has made four appearances across all competitions for the Baggies first team this season, including three 90 minute-long outings in the club’s Carabao Cup campaign where he helped earn wins against Mansfield and Luton.

OPINION

West Brom would be stupid not to get Harper tied down to a new deal before he enters the last six months of his current terms in January. Clubs outside of England could make a move for the teenager when the New Year comes around and he still hasn’t penned a new agreement, so it makes sense to get him tied down now. Harper has been very impressive in his senior appearances for West Brom this season. Although he began his career as a striker, the box-to-box midfielder looks calm and composed whenever he is on the ball and it is clear that he is someone with huge potential. West Brom have had young players like this amount to nothing over the last few years so hopefully Harper is a player who can really reach his peak at The Hawthorns and become a true fan favourite. He won’t be able to do that though unless he agrees a new deal so Darren Moore needs to work hard on reaching an agreement with the midfielder.
