Tottenham Hotspur fear their chances of signing Boca Junior midfielder Wilmar Barrios could be hit after Real Madrid entered the race for the Colombian, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claims that Spurs remain keen on bringing in the 25-year-old, but will not enter a bidding war with the Spanish giants.

Barrios is said to be looking to leave Boca in January, and Tottenham are keen to trigger the £16million release clause present in his contract with the Argentine side.

However, the Star’s report states that Madrid are already lining up a £20million offer for the player and, with the costs of the club’s new stadium spiralling, Tottenham aren’t keen on getting into a bidding war with Santiago Solari’s side.

Good move for Tottenham?

Well, the move itself could be good for the club. Mousa Dembele appears to be on his last legs at Tottenham, while Eric Dier and Moussa Sissoko alternate between inspired and disconcerting performances. There is a vacancy for a defensive midfielder at the club and there’s no reason why Barrios couldn’t fill it. The Colombia international is as combative as they come and would be a nice addition to a Spurs midfield that has looked somewhat lightweight at times this season. If they can see off Madrid then Barrios would certainly be a smart addition for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Likely to happen?

Unfortunately whenever Madrid enter the race for a player it becomes difficult to envision any other scenario besides the European champions signing said player. If Solari’s team are genuinely interested in Barrios, as the Star suggest, then it could be night night for Spurs’s chances of signing him. Let’s hope chairman Daniel Levy can pull a rabbit out of his hat here.
