A number of Tottenham fans have turned to social media to react to goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga’s Twitter post celebrating the anniversary of his debut for the club.
The shot stopper, signed from Southampton in the summer of 2017, made his one and only appearance of last season in the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace, with senior duo Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm both missing.
The rarely seen 6’4″ giant (source: Transfermarkt), who has featured just three more times since his outing against the Eagles, kept a clean sheet to secure a 1-0 win, and turned to his personal Twitter account to celebrate the anniversary on Monday.

Many fans were left congratulating him and insisting that he deserved to be playing more, with some insisting he would be the number one choice between the sticks as early as next season.
COMMENTARY
Gazzaniga seems to be building up a somewhat cult following among Tottenham fans, who seem to have elevated their opinions of him not based on his own performances but on the displays of their other shot stoppers, who they deem to be under-performing this season. Has Gazzaniga done enough to prove himself as a contender for the starting XI? He has been solid if unspectacular between the sticks but that is in just four appearances over a year and a half, and with just 24 Premier League outings under his belt the argument could be made that he is still yet to prove himself as being worthy of a regular starting spot for Spurs. He does look to have usurped Michel Vorm as Hugo Lloris’ understudy but while the French international, who is also club captain, might have been guilty of some costly errors, he does not look like being replaced by Gazzaniga any time soon.

Progressing nicely. Got a great keeper in front of you, he’ll hopefully drive you become even better and, eventually, get that No. 1 spot. Keep up the good work.
