If there were any Leeds fans who were hoping that Pontus Jansson had been withdrawn from the internationals this week as a precaution, the latest Phil Hay update will be very worrying.

According to Hay, Jansson is due for “scans” to assess the extent of his injury problem and if the worst fears are confirmed, he could be set for a stint on the sidelines.

With Gateano Berardi already out, along with Luke Ayling, the Leeds defence is paper-thin to say the least.

Fans have been calling for a new centre-back all season and they might finally get their wish if Jansson is out for a while.

And, if Leeds can’t wait until January, there are three free agents who could step in and do a job straight away.

  1. James Collins
Collins was heartbroken when he was told that West Ham weren’t going to extend his contract over the summer. The 35-year-old who has played 214 games for the Hammers tried again, going back to train with West Ham in the hope of turning Manuel Pellegrini’s head. That didn’t work and it’s left Collins without a club. We watched him last season and we’ve no doubt he could still do a wonderful job in the Championship.

  2. Robert Huth
Like Collins, Huth left a Premier League side over the summer. Huth did a brilliant job at Leicester making almost 100 appearances for the midlands club and comes with experience of playing for Chelsea. He’s only 34 and he’s already said that Leeds would be the perfect move for him. Might he be too expensive?

  3. Steven Caulker
Our wildcard. Former England international Caulker is only 26 but his career has taken a nosedive and he’s currently without a club after leaving Dundee over the summer. He was hoping for a quick route back into the game but so far he hasn’t had an offer he wants to take up. The former Liverpool and QPR man has struggled with mental health problems but was a fantastic player in his prime.
