Rangers misfit Lee Wallace is set to be handed a lifeline away from his Ibrox hell in January, according to talkSPORT journalist Derek Clark.

He claims that Wigan will make a move for former Rangers captain Lee Wallace in January, after manager Paul Cook said he was “desperate” to bring in a left-back.

This would be the second player Wigan have signed from Rangers recently after bringing Josh Windass south of the border in the summer.

Clark made the claim on his personal Twitter page on Tuesday afternoon.

OPINION

This would surely be the best move for both clubs and the player. Ironically, this story comes about just hours after Steven Gerrard pretty much sealed the end for Wallace at Rangers. The fans at Ibrox still love him for the loyalty he’s shown the club through their hard times. But, talking at the AGM< Gerrard said he had better players in that position. And that, despite having to play right-back Jon Flanagan and Lee Halliday in the left-back spot since Borna Barisic was injured. That confirms that it would take a dramatic set of circumstances for Wallace to improve on his one minute of football for the Rangers first-team this season. It’s a real shame that Wallace’s time at Ibrox has come to an end like this. He signed in 2011 for £1.5m under Ally McCoist and has made 260 appearances for the club, but we doubt he’ll make 261. He’s out of contract in the summer which means it’s Rangers’ last chance to get a fee for him. And we think that fee is going to be minimal – £200k should do the job, and that would be a bargain for the “desperate” Paul Cook.
