Rangers are plotting fresh action in the ongoing controversy surrounding winger Daniel Candeias as Willie Collum’s reasoning behind his shock sending off versus St Mirren is revealed in a fresh twist, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper states that the Scottish Football Association (SFA) have revealed the referee showed the Gers man a second yellow before the international break for goading Anton Ferdinand and getting involved with other St Mirren players after their late goal, but that the Ibrox outfit are not satisfied with the explanation.

The report claims that the Gers are now looking at what action they can take, having seen an appeal for wrongful dismissal turned down, as they look to take further action over a decision branded “embarrassing” by Steven Gerrard.

Opinion

This whole saga is threatening to overshadow not just Rangers’ season but the Scottish Premiership as a whole. It seems ridiculous that Candeias was sent off for apparently winding the St Mirren players up as the footage shown by broadcasters suggests there was very little, if any, sort of behaviour which warranted a second yellow. The whole situation has dragged the standard of officiating in Scotland through the dirt and it is no surprise that Rangers want to continue pursuing what they will feel is justice. The SFA would have avoided all of this had they just acknowledged that the referee made a mistake – something which fans might be upset about at the time but would come to accept with a reasonable explanation – but their persistence to defend the decision is helping nobody. Will this be the big talking point come the end of the season? If it continues in the way it is, then perhaps so, and that is not what the SFA want at all.
