Rangers and Celtic were chasing the same player in the summer – Iran’s exciting left-sided flyer Milad Mohammadi, according to the Scottish Sun.

He made a name for himself at the World Cup after his infamous somersault throw-in against Spain.

The £2million move did’t transpire, but the versatile and exciting left-sided player, who can play at left-back or on the wing, now looks certain to be on the move either in January or in the summer.

That’s when his contract expires and Celtic have made the first move, stepping up their interest in a player who could sign a pre-contract agreement in January ahead of a free move next summer.

The latest report from the Scottish Sun claims that Mohammadi wants a move to Britain and is currently considering the interest from Celtic.

Watford are said to be interested as well, with Javi Garcia a big fan, and that should light a fire under Mark Allen at Rangers.

Celtic won’t be able to offer Mohammadi first-team football in his preferred position, however, with Kieran Tierney the established number one.

That gives Rangers the chance to steam in and steal him from under Celtic’s nose.

Things are happening at Ibrox and Mohammadi would surely jump at the chance of working under Steven Gerrard.

Qualification for the last 32 of the Europa League could go a long way towards convincing Mohammadi that Ibrox is the place to go and Rangers can take a huge step towards that by beating Spartak Moscow on Thursday.

Rangers fans would love it if Allen could steal in and land the player ahead of Celtic or Premier League Watford, and we believe he can do it for a cut-price fee in January.
