BBC Sportsound pundit Tam McManus has slammed Rangers defender Jon Flanagan during their Europa League game against Villarreal.

Flanagan, the former Liverpool right-back, has been filling in at left-back for Rangers but was dropped after a string of poor performances.

However, Gerrard reinstated him for the game at Ibrox on Thursday night and he had a hapless first-half, almost costing his side a goal.

McManus said “Lee Wallace is a better player than Flanagan. All day long IMO.”

OPINION

Many Rangers fans would have loved to see Lee Wallace in the line-up rather than Flanagan. And that went double after they watched him in action. To be fair to Flanagan, he’s playing out of position, but with Borna Barisic injured it makes it even more perplexing that former skipper Lee Wallace has been frozen out at Ibrox. He’s played just one minute this season and was effectively told his career at Rangers was over this week by Gerrard. The manager said that he had better options at the left-back position. That includes someone the fans don’t rate who normally plays right-back and Andy Halliday. It seems that there’s more than just football behind the Wallace situation and that’s a big shame. His contract is up at the end of the season and he’ll be leaving on a free in the summer or for a nominal fee in January. If he’s watching tonight he must have wondered what was going on.
