Wigan want to bring ‘top spy’ Mick Doherty from Celtic down to the Championship, according to transfer expert Alan Nixon.

The Sun’s top transfer journalist claims that Doherty, the former chief scout with Everton, Chelsea and Sunderland is close with Wigan manager Paul Cook.

Nixon made the claim on his personal Twitter account on Monday morning.

OPINION

Doherty has got a strong record in recruitment at the very highest level. In his career he helped unearth Wayne Rooney as well as the likes of Seamus Coleman and Shkodran Mustafi. Things have been a bit quieter at Celtic with last summer’s transfer window an especially frustrating one for supporters. Doherty joined Celtic after Sunderland were relegated but it seems like he’s in demand again, with Championship side Wigan and manager Paul Cook intent on getting him south of the border. If he went it would be a blow for Celtic, who are looking to strengthen in the January transfer window. The appointment of Doherty was masterminded by Celtic head of recruitment Lee Congerton and he was responsible for finding players for Brendan Rodgers and the Celtic first-team. Celtic’s loss would be Wigan’s gain though Cook’s side sit at the wrong end of the Championship table and on the lookout for players who can fire them back towards the Premier League.
