Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been lined up by Premier League side Southampton as their potential new manager as current boss Mark Hughes comes under serious pressure following their poor start to the season, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Saints are considering swinging the axe on the Welsh manager as the club sit just above the relegation zone despite having lost to fellow top flight strugglers Fulham 3-2 on Saturday.

The report states that Southampton are willing to bin Hughes earlier than they did with Mauricio Pellegrino last season, and that Rodgers is one of the candidates under contention to take his place, offering the Hoops man a return to the top flight after leaving Liverpool.

However, it is claimed that convincing him to leave Parkhead will take some doing as he enjoys success in Glasgow.

Opinion

While it might be said that Rodgers needs convincing to make the move, Southampton is the sort of club where he would thrive if given the support of the board, and a return back to the English top flight could well be too tempting after winning all he can domestically in Scotland for two years in a row. Is he open to a new challenge? Only time will tell, but it does seem as though there will be a seat open at a Premier League side in the coming weeks. Southampton’s struggles are clear as day but you would think they have enough quality in their side to turn it around and with a strong core of the squad, much like what Rodgers has at Celtic, he could make quite the impact on taking them up the table. This should be a worrying report for the Parkhead faithful and there will be many hoping it remains as just paper talk.
