Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has provided an update on the knock that winger Lewis Morgan took against Heart of Midlothian on Saturday.

The 22-year-old came off the bench late on in the 5-0 victory over Craig Levein’s side, and suffered a hefty challenge from Hearts midfielder Peter Haring.

However, Rodgers has now provided some encouraging news on the winger’s status: “It was a sore one, he’ll need ice on it and hopefully be ok by the beginning of the week,” he told the club’s official Twitter account.

The news is a plus for Morgan, who has struggled to secure regular first team football this season. He would have feared missing significant time but it now appears that won’t happen.

OPINION

This is good news for both Morgan and Celtic. The winger isn’t a first choice player by any means but he’s someone who can come off the bench in a pinch and produce a solid performance. He took a nasty hit from Haring and was down on the ground for a short period of time, but it appears that he won’t be missing any first team football as a result. Rodgers needs players like Morgan in his squad in order to supplement the first team stars who play on a game by game basis, so for that reason he’ll be pleased that the winger will be back to full fitness so soon. By the beginning of next week Morgan will be fine so there’s no reason why he couldn’t feasibly feature against RB Leipzig in the Europa League on Thursday. Whether he does or not remains to be seen, but it’s good news that the player has avoided any left term damage anyway. He’ll be hoping to get a few more starts in the next few months as he looks to kick on this campaign.
