Brendan Rodgers had admitted that the door is open for Mikael Lustig to stay at Celtic after his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a move to Swedish side AIK and Lustig has admitted that he would be open to that.

But Rodgers has said that he will have talks with Lustig over the winter and heaped praise on the defender.

Talking in the Scottish Sun Rodgers said, “Mika has been a great servant for me in my time here. Probably over the course of this winter, which is a busy period, we can sort it all out.

“There is maybe something we can look at with that. There are one or two players, contract-wise, who we, as a club, need to sort out.

“But at this moment in time Mika’s playing really well. I’ve loved working with him.

“He is a very important player for us and I’m sure, in due course, that will be looked at.”

OPINION

Celtic have a one-year option on Lustig and could extend his near-seven-year stay with the club. He’s come in for some criticism this season but he’s said that he would like to stay and it sounds like Rodgers is open to that. He’s been an important player for Celtic through the years, making 255 appearances and winning seven titles and six cups. We think it’s a no-brainer. Celtic obviously need to look at getting another right-back but getting someone in for the future with Lustig around for another year seems to make total sense. After what Rodgers has said here and what Lustig has said in the past we’d be really surprised if they didn’t trigger the option which would see Lustig stay at the club until he’s 33. That could give him the opportunity to make it nine titles at Celtic, a remarkable record. Not many players can look back on their careers and say they had that much success, let alone at a single club.
