Celtic defender Mikael Lustig is wanted by Swedish outfit AIK at the end of his current contract, according to Fotboll Direkt.

The Swedish outlet reports on their website that the club from his homeland are keen to sign him when his contract ends in the summer of 2019 – and AIK’s sporting director Bjorn Wesstrom has even said that a potential deal is in the works.

The report also states that Lustig – who has starred for the Hoops in over 250 matches – would like to return to Sweden, with the interested club amongst his preferred destinations.

Good move for Celtic?

The defender has been criticised over the last year for his performances and is arguably the weak link within Brendan Rodgers’ side, so a moving away would be a good move on the whole. He is considered as a scapegoat amongst the Celtic faithful, and it is unlikely that they would miss him too much if he were to leave in the summer’s transfer window. Him leaving would allow Rodgers to sign a defender of more quality than Lustig, which would arguably be much to the fans’ delight.

Likely to happen?

Considering that Lustig’s contract expires in the summer of 2019, a move is likely to happen seeming as he will be available on a free transfer. The fact that he is not a fan favourite at Celtic makes it even more likely, as they would be more than happy to see him leave the club in the summer. It is believed that he would prefer a move back to Sweden if he were to leave, and with AIK interested in offering him a return, he may be convinced to depart.
