Manchester City attacker Daniel Arzani has revealed on Instagram he will miss the rest of the season after suffering injury heartbreak.

The winger, who is on a two-year loan at Celtic, explained that he requires a knee reconstruction after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The injury rules Arzani out of Australia’s Asian Cup defence next January and the rest of the European season following the injury sustained while changing direction 20 minutes into his Celtic debut last week.

“This is also a very tough time for me as I received the bad news today that I will indeed need an ACL op [operation], ruling me out until next season,” Arzani posted on his personal Instagram account on Tuesday after visiting a knee specialist in Spain.

Heartbreak for Arzani and a major blow to all three teams who have invested massively in an exciting talent – loan club Celtic, parent club Man City and national team Australia. It had been a frustrating season already for the 19-year-old, who joined the Scottish champions on a high after a series of dazzling cameos for the Socceroos at the World Cup but found himself way down the pecking order at Parkhead and playing for the youth team on Mondays in front of a few hundred supporters. For a player who has made five international appearances and caught the eye in Russia, Arzani’s status was odd, even though there were growing signs he was winning the trust of Brendan Rodgers after making his debut last week due to an injury crisis. Arzani now must dig deep and suffer the pain and mental examination of rest and extensive rehabilitation. Most players do at some point in their career, and he must prepare for a tough nine to 12 months.
