OPINION
What a few days for Callum McGregor and his Scotland teammates. The national clinched a Euro 2020 play-off place and Nations League promotion after a dramatic and angst-ridden night against Israel at Hampden, with James Forrest banging in a memorable hat-trick to take his tally to five goals in two matches. Just as impressive as far as many Celtic and Scotland fans were concerned was the performance in the midfield anchorman role of Callum McGregor. The 25-year-old has been outstanding of late after stepping into the shoes of the injured Scott Brown as the protector of the defence, and there was plenty of love for him again on social media on Tuesday night as he ran the show in the centre of the pitch. Even a few Rangers fans were acknowledging the contribution of the Hoops academy product who, like Forrest, is in the form of his life. This can only bode well for Celtic and Scotland going forward as the midfielder grows into a new role that could be his for years to come.

HT thoughts
– Callum McGregor is class
– Armstrong looking back to his best
– I'll take the bad stuff from Forrest when the good stuff is as good as this
– Fletcher doing a tonne of the hard work to make it happen for others— Jamie Borthwick (@jamiekborthwick) November 20, 2018

Callum McGregor has just found a new role for himself in that deep lying midfield. The most improved player in Scotland IMO. Classy. #SCOISR
