Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has told supporters to “relax” over the status of striker Leigh Griffiths as worries mount over whether he will be fit enough to take part in the crucial festive period.

The Hoops have been missing the Scottish striker for the last four league games as a result of a persistent injury problem which has plagued him for much of the campaign and with Europa League and important domestic matches – including an Glasgow Derby clash against Rangers – the fans at Paradise are sweating over his availability.

As quoted by Video Celts speaking at the Annual General Meeting, Rodgers told those in attendance: “He has rejoined the squad in training for the last four or five days. You have to be at a super level of fitness for this side, Leigh is up for that and fighting for his place.

“He’s ok, just relax.”

Opinion

While Rodgers might be doing his best to try and ease the worries of the Celtic fans, his comments do not do an awful lot to help settle the nerves. The Hoops have missed Griffiths up top and with so many important matches coming up over the next month and a half – which could strongly determine their future success and/or failures – they could really do with him back. Hearing he is back in training is a good start but there needs to be more than just that. Will he be risked in the first few games back after the international break? Probably not, so that is another week or two where he will be missing, and then we are into December. If he is not part of the match day squad by the start of the month, then serious questions need to be asked about why he is not recovering from what seemed to be an inconspicuous problem.
