A section of Rangers fans were left drooling over Andy Halliday after an impressive performance at left-back in Rangers’ 2-0 win against St Mirren in Paisley on Saturday.

Halliday, 27, started ahead of Jon Flanagan on the left-side of Steven Gerrard’s defence and was even handed set-piece duties as he crossed several brilliant corners into the St Mirren box with his team-mates failing to make the most of them.

Some Gers fans were thrilled by the former Middlesbrough man’s performance, with one saying that we was their “best player by miles”.

COMMENTARY:

Halliday has gone from zero to hero with most Rangers fans. He was in great form against St Mirren and looks as though he should replace James Tavernier, who was terrible, in set-piece duties as long as he is on the pitch. Unfortunately, Gerrard is likely to get Borna Barisic in at left-back as soon as he is back to fitness and until then, Jon Flanagan will probably still be the preferred option. The reaction by some fans about Halliday’s performances lately says it all though. He has been inspired at left-back and the fact he can also play in the midfield shows that he is an invaluable squad player for Gerrard. Rangers taken on Spartak Moscow in Russia on Thursday, so will Gerrard keep the faith in Halliday and start him for the Europa League clash? Or will Flanagan be back in the fray? It should be a no-brainer.
