Rangers are set to terminate their loan deal for striker Umar Sadiq early, according to the Express.

The under-fire player was criticised heavily by Rangers manager Steven Gerrard in September, and was told he had to “improve everything” to get in the first-team.

He got his shot in the Scottish Cup semi-final against Aberdeen but blew it with a poor performance and was criticised by Gerrard again for a controversial incident that saw him booked for diving when he was seemingly through on goal.

That could end up being the move that ended his short Rangers career.

That looks like it could have been Sadiq’s first and final chance in a Rangers shirt as the club looks set to recruit again in January. The Sadiq deal never worked out for the club and they would be best terminating the deal for both sides. He was due to return to Roma in the summer but it sounds like he could be heading back there before the January transfer window opens. The 21-year-old will look back on that semi-final with Aberdeen and wonder what might have been. If he’d stayed on his feet and scored the equaliser, and if Rangers had gone on to win the game, he might have been hailed as a hero. Instead he earned the ire of Steven Gerrard and the Rangers fans and it’s seemingly shit the door on any further first-team chances. On these fine margins careers rest, but Sadiq must learn from the experience and come back stronger. It just won’t be at Ibrox.
