After a summer in which there were huge changes at Ibrox, Rangers appear to have taken huge strides forward in their hunt of a return to their former glories – but they still need to step things up to the next level if they want to challenge at the top.

The likes of Kyle Lafferty and Allan McGregor returned to their former side while hot young talents such as Ryan Kent and Ovie Ejaria also made the move to improve the options at manager Steven Gerrard’s disposal, and while they each have quality to offer, they are still not quite at the level needed to push on.

If they look at how Celtic became a treble winning side, it was the likes of Scott Sinclair, Kolo Toure and Moussa Dembele who made the difference – and Rangers need to look at raiding England for top talents who might well be available.

One man who seems likely to leave his club is Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with the Times claiming that the 22-year-old is set to ask for a loan move away from the side sitting third in the Premier League this January.

Now, there is no denying that the England international is a seriously ambitious target for the Gers but at the same time, regular first team action both domestically and on their European campaign is more than what many sides would be able to offer.

Gerrard is a big draw to players and Loftus-Cheek could learn so much from a man who played in a similar style during his career, and while it might not be the level of competition he wants, it could prove to be a really wise move for his future.

He is a next level signing for Scottish football and he could even reignite his faltering England career at Ibrox – which is why the Light Blues need to make an ambitious raid for his capture.
