While the summer transfer window might have shut some time ago, it has not stopped Wolves from being involved in agreeing terms over a signing – albeit a player they already have on their books.

There was plenty of controversy over the manner in which the club secured the capture of Portuguese international goalkeeper Rui Patricio, with the shot stopper cancelling his contract at Sporting CP after controversy over a bust up with fans, before heading to Molineux.

He has been a good performer between the sticks in the Premier League, pulling a number of important saves and helping Wolves in their bright start in the top flight.

However, his former side were unhappy with the manner of his exit and were left demanding a transfer fee – something which has finally been agreed upon after months of negotiation.

The official statement, revealed on Wolves’ official website, was just 24 words long and stated: “Wolves have reached an agreement that will see Sporting Clube de Portugal receive a fee of €18m for the transfer of goalkeeper Rui Patricio.”

That €18million fee – which translates to £15.9million – might seem like nothing when you consider the sort of prices paid for Thibaut Courtois and Alisson this summer, but he is not a hot prospect with plenty of years left but an established star heading into the latter stages of his career.

In comparison, Newcastle United signed Martin Dubravka – a Slovakian international – for a reported fee of just £4million, and there is very little between the pair this season.

At 30-years-old, nearly £16million is a lot of money to be paying and while Wolves might be able to afford it thanks to their affluent owners, it is still an error which is going to cost the club.

Wolves might have thought they would get away with a bargain, but it seems to have been an expensive blunder which while it might bring quality goalkeeping performances, is not savvy spending.
