Ex-Arsenal defender Lauren has told Sky Sports that he believes out of favour midfielder Aaron Ramsey should move to West Ham.

According to further reports from Sky Sports, the Welsh international has been told that he will not be offered a new contract by the Gunners and will therefore be free to leave the Emirates at the end of the season.

Speaking to Sky, Lauren, a member of Arsenal’s legendary invincible title-winning side, said: “He wants to play. The club are looking at other ways but as a player you have to find your own way.

“If you don’t have the first-team shirt you have to go elsewhere. If I was him I would stay in London because he knows the city.

“Somewhere like West Ham would fit him. It would give him the leadership he needs and he is based in London so I think he has to stay at a London club.”

OPINION

On the face of it, it seems a little baffling that Arsenal are prepared to allow a player such as Ramsey to leave. He has been a loyal servant to the club for a decade now, and through nightmare injuries and years of underwhelming title challenges has proved to be a player of consistent quality and perfect attitude. If he is to leave the Emirates in the summer there is likely to be an almighty scramble to secure his signature, and realistically West Ham will probably not be the most attractive footballing offer he receives. That being said, Lauren raises a valid point about the personal side of a deal, and how the opportunity to remain in London could be a temptation. The Hammers clearly have a lot of ambition, and year after year promise to kick on with a series of eye-catching summer signings. Sadly, the majority of the time these additions lack the substance to back up their style and a cycle of disappointment is repeated. Bringing in a player like Ramsey, a proven top quality Premier League box-to-box midfielder with a wealth of European and international experience, could be exactly the sort of move Manuel Pellegrini’s side need to make to turn their fortunes around.
