West Ham United are interested in making a surprise January move for Parma winger Gervinho, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian outlet claims that the Hammers could make a move for the Ivory Coast international in the winter transfer window.

Any move would bring the 31-year-old back to the Premier League for the first time since he left Arsenal in 2013 following an underwhelming spell at the Emirates Stadium.

However, Calcio Mercato’s report claims that Parma will resist any attempt to prize the former Gunner away from the Serie A side.

Good move for West Ham?

This seems like a move right out of left field. Perhaps this is simply an irrational reaction to Andriy Yarmolenko’s injury, but there’s nothing to suggest that Gervinho would prove a better fit in the Premier League now than he did during his peak years at Arsenal. He is 31 years of age now which would suggest his best days are behind him – and he didn’t exactly flourish in England during his best years. To his credit, Gervinho has started the season in excellent form for Parma, scoring three goals in six games – including one against the champions Juventus. However, the Hammers would surely be better off nurturing the likes of Felipe Anderson and Grady Diangana than resorting to the likes of Gervinho.

Likely to happen?

Well, Calcio Mercato’s report directly states that Parma have no desire to sell the Ivorian and will resist any attempt from West Ham to sign him so, no, it doesn’t appear likely that Gervinho will be arriving in East London in January.
