A section of West Ham United fans have taken to Twitter to slam the performance of Arthur Masuaku in the 3-1 defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday.

The two sides met in the Carabao Cup at the London Stadium and it was Heung Min-Son who initially put the visitors in the lead, and he added another in the 54th minute before the game was put to bed by Fernando Llorente in the 75th minute.

Lucas Perez bagged a consolation for the hosts, but many West Ham fans were not pleased in the slightest with the display of Masuaku, with some comments including “should never play in defence” and “almost had a stinker”.

COMMENTARY

It is not surprising in the slightest that the West Ham fans are fuming with the performance of Masuaku on Wednesday. One supporter even remarked how he should be offloaded in January, and it is hard not to agree with them. However, he has previously stated that he does not like playing in defence and instead prefers to go forward, but for some reason, Manuel Pellegrini keeps playing him in the back four. We may see a much better player if he is not in defence, but it is not likely that he will be starting games any time soon based on this display – which is a shame, as he looks like he has so much to give. There is no excuse for being so poor – even if you are playing out of your preferred position. The scoreline shows just how lacklustre the Hammers were – and the fact that Tottenham beat them 3-1 without being at their best is really saying something.
