Everton youngster Ademola Lookman has returned to the club early from international duty with England Under-21s after suffering a minor injury.

As reported on the club’s official website, the 21-year-old forward is set to undergo treatment at Finch Farm before an estimate is put on his recovery period from the setback.

While it is claimed that Lookman’s injury is not a serious one, the blow is still likely to put him out of contention when the Premier League returns this weekend, with the Toffees set to face Cardiff City at home.

Such a game would have been a perfect opportunity for manager Marco Silva to start Lookman, who has been impressing in recent weeks, but that is now unlikely to happen.

Instead, starting winger Theo Walcott is now set for another chance to find some form after a period which has seen his performances dip alarmingly.

The 5ft 9in forward [Transfermarkt] has looked totally off the pace in a couple of games while failing to take his chances throughout the past few weeks, and his lack of form will be a worry for Silva.

Lookman’s continued impact off the bench will have surely grabbed Silva’s attention, and it had been widely speculated that the youngster was set for a chance from the off.

This injury blow is therefore massively untimely, and it hands a reprieve to the below-par Walcott, who has a chance to fire himself back into Silva’s good books.

Unfortunately for Lookman that may mean it is back to square one in his quest for a starting berth, and that is a big setback for the 21-year-old after such a promising start to the campaign.
