Tottenham Hotspur became the first Premier League team ever to not sign a player in the summer window this year, meaning some movement is expected in the upcoming January market.

The biggest issues facing Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino at the moment are in central midfield, attacking midfield, and up front, with Tottenham having decent cover in all other positions.

Looking more specifically at their problems in the number ten role, it is clear for everyone to see that Christian Eriksen needs some quality support if Spurs are to go to the next level.

Pochettino’s men rely to heavily on the Denmark international, and when he is not selected or not available, they find it far too hard to unlock defences.

The form of players like Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura has helped them cope with Eriksen at points this season, but a new attacking midfielder must be a priority for Pochettino.

According to The Sun, bitter rivals Arsenal are targeting a January move for Villareal star Pablo Fornals, who has a £17.8million release clause in his contract.

Fornals is a 22-year-old attacking midfielder who has burst onto the scene in La Liga in recent seasons, and has now earned his first caps for Spain on the international stage.

For such a player to be available for just £17.8million in today’s market is quite frankly astounding, and Tottenham must now hijack Arsenal’s interest in the Spanish dynamo.

Fornals is the perfect candidate to fill in for Eriksen when needed and even play alongside the Dane in what would be a seriously creative midfield.

His £17.8million price tag makes a January swoop an absolute no-brainer for Pochettino and Tottenham, and they must now launch such a move when the window rolls around.
