Alan Shearer has slammed David Luiz and Alvaro Morata in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday evening, and he blamed Luiz for all three of Spurs goals.

A lacklustre outing from Maurizio Sarri’s men was soundly punished by strikes from Dele Alli, Harry Kane, and Son Heung-Min, and the ex-international deemed Luiz’s showing to be particularly unacceptable.

In a column for The Sun Shearer said: “Luiz also had a shocker. He was given the runaround by the brilliant movement of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min. He was taken to places on the pitch he didn’t want to go.

“Luiz was at fault for all three Spurs goals… All season I’ve said if he hasn’t got the protection he can get exposed in a back four. That is why Antonio Conte went to a back five!”

The Chelsea striker also came under fire from Shearer as well, who said, “Alvaro Morata was another who had a stinker. If I had hair, I’d have been pulling it out watching him constantly running offside.

“It was like he did not know the offside law!”

Saturday’s defeat was Chelsea’s first in the Premier League under Sarri and saw their north London rivals leapfrog them into third in the table.

Opinion

David Luiz has, unfortunately, built a reputation as a high risk presence for any team he plays for. There is no doubting his talent, and when he is good he is very, very good, but there is always the lurking concern that he is on the brink of making a dreadful mistake or, in the case of Saturday’s match, putting in a devastatingly woeful all-round performance. The Brazilian has been uncharacteristically assured at the heart of the Blues’ defence so far this campaign, but the worry going forward for Maurizio Sarri, and Chelsea fans in general, will be that Chelsea’s nearest rivals, emboldened by Spurs performance and reminded of Luiz’s waning physicality, seek to to target the maverick defender and expose his flaws to the same ruthless effect that Alli, Kane, and Son did. At the other end, Morata has consistently flattered to deceive since arriving at Chelsea for a fee close to £60million from Real Madrid. He’s shown flashes this season of being the player they thought they were buying bit he was awful against Tottenham.
