Tottenham’s barren summer transfer window left many fans frustrated at the lack of progress shown by their club – although results this season might have tempered their anger.

The Lilywhites sit third in the Premier League after their convincing win over London rivals Chelsea and head into Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan knowing that they have to secure victory to stand any chance of qualifying for the knock out stages of the competition.

They will have to take on the Italians without a number of their centre back options, with Davinson Sanchez out through injury and Juan Foyth unavailable due to not being registered in the Champions League squad.

With Toby Alderweireld’s future still up in the air and Jan Vertonghen having missed a number of games through injury, a new centre back might well be at the top of the list for Mauricio Pochettino heading into January.

Football.London have stated that Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt has been firmly on the club’s radar for some time now and that they were tempted to make a move over the summer – so they should definitely be keeping an eye on his status.

However, is he worth the record breaking £53million fee that Mundo Deportivo are claiming the Dutch giants have slapped on his head?

Absolutely.

At 19-years-old the centre back should be considered a young talent for the future and while he has plenty of room to develop he is already a top class defender with 13 international caps for the Netherlands and the captain’s armband at Ajax.

He can go on to become a world class player with the right guidance and development and playing regularly in the Premier League could have an amazing impact on his progress – just look at former teammate Sanchez in north London.

Snapping up de Ligt for the mega money fee would help take Tottenham to the next level both domestically and in Europe and secure a future of success for the Lilywhites.

He would worth every penny of that fee.
