A section of Tottenham fans took to Twitter to destroy Ben Davies for his performance in their team’s 1-0 Premier League win against Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.

Davies played the full 90 minutes of the Selhurst Park clash as a Juan Foyth goal was enough to secure the three points for his team in a hard-fought London derby.

Many Spurs supporters were critical of Davies, with comments including “sell him…in January”.

COMMENTARY:

It appears Davies has become a scapegoat for a section of Tottenham fans on social media. With Moussa Sissoko playing the best football of his Spurs career and Erik Lamela consistently delivering the goods, many supporters have turned on Davies, another no-frills operator who unfussily gets on with his job. Davies wasn’t awful or atrocious against Palace. The Wales international was merely okay from an attacking sense and solid defensively. He is capable in the opposition third but doesn’t have the dynamism of teammate Danny Rose, who Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed is unlikely to play again until December. Many Tottenham supporters want the manager to bring in new full-backs who can reach the levels consistently hit by Rose and ex-Spur Kyle Walker in 2015 and 2016, when their side had the best in the Premier League in those positions. Fair enough. But destroying Davies week in, week out is unfair. The mainstay is better than many paint him out to be.
