Newcastle United sent representatives to watch target Miguel Almiron in action for Atlanta United last weekend, according to the Northern Echo.

The regional newspaper reports on its website that the Magpies watched on as the Paraguay international netted one of the goals in a 3-1 win over New York City in America’s Eastern Conference.

The report also states that the red-hot playmaker’s agent was present at the 2-1 victory over Bournemouth last Saturday, which followed with Newcastle travelling to go and see him play in Georgia.

It is expected that the club will make an effort to sign Almiron – who has been in brilliant form with 13 goals and a further 13 assists this season – in the January transfer window.

Good move for Newcastle?

Yes, most definitely – who would not want a player who has already scored 13 times and registered 13 assists this season? He would certainly be a coup for Rafa Benitez, but what an impact he would make on the side. Almiron is quite clearly a talent if he also has the likes of Tottenham after him, so Newcastle would feel incredibly lucky if they got him onto their books in the next transfer window.

Likely to happen?

Seeming as the club have sent representatives to go and watch him, a move going through for him in January now looks more likely than ever before. Yes, they will face some tough competition in the shape of Spurs, but they know that they can guarantee him regular game time at St James’ Park. Going to watch him play not long before the transfer window is a step in the right direction for United – as it shows that they are serious about making an offer for him when the time comes.
