Newcastle United have been scouting Atlanta United attacking midfielder Miguel Almiron for the last two seasons but fans should not get too excited about a potential swoop just yet, according to journalist Chris Waugh.

The Chronicle reporter has stated in a live question and answer on the newspaper’s blog (14/11, 12:04) that the 24-year-old Paraguay international has been on the radar at St James’ Park for the last two years and that reports linking the club with a move have some truth in them.

However, Waugh insists that while the versatile forward is indeed one of those named as a potential target behind closed doors, the club’s shortlist is yet to be drawn up and that interest from elsewhere might raise the price beyond Newcastle’s means.

Opinion

Newcastle fans should have learned not to get excited when news involves transfers but the Toon Army simply cannot stop holding out hope that Mike Ashley is going to actually show some amibition at St James’ Park some time soon. As for this one, there seems to be some truth that the Magpies are chasing his capture but as the Chronicle man says, any sort of bidding war is going to blow the club out of the water. He seems a man very much in demand and unless other clubs are simply talking the talk but not walking the walk when it comes to pursuing a transfer, Newcastle do not stand a chance. It is good to see Benitez being ambitious when it comes to new arrivals but you know that with Ashley at the helm that the Spaniard is going to have to scrape around for bargains rather than sealing the top quality signings that he would love to present to the Newcastle faithful. Almiron is the sort of signing to get fans off their feet – but it is likely he will be doing that elsewhere rather than at St James’ Park.
