The anger and frustration shown by Newcastle United fans towards owner Mike Ashley is indeed having an impact on the businessman as he takes on a more public role as takeover rumours continue to circulate, according to journalist Simon Bird.

The Mirror writer, a reliable reporter on the Magpies, claims in his column for the newspaper that the protests held by the Toon Army, which have been not only at St James’ Park but at Sports Direct stores – Ashley’s primary business – have played a role in the tycoon taking action, including the team meeting on Tyneside earlier this season and a more open dialogue with manager Rafael Benitez.

However, with the club still up for sale, the journalist states the first Newcastle fans may hear of any deal – which is said to be some way off yet – will be when the papers are signed and it is officially announced, with Ashley looking to keep a tight lid on things.

Opinion

Newcastle fans have voiced their anger towards Ashley for a number of years but this season there seems to be a real organised effort to make their frustrations heard. Even with Ashley back in the public spotlight and making an effort to appear positive and on board with the club, certain sections of the Toon Army have refused to back down and the pressure continues to build on the multi-millionaire. Those protesting Ashley have been savvy in targeting Sports Direct, where the businessman makes his money, as a location for their demonstrations and the publicity it is getting builds week on week. There might not be enough pressure to force Ashley out immediately, but it is clear that Newcastle fans have had enough and want to see him out the door. Their actions are having the desired impact and they will hope that it does end up with a new owner coming in sooner rather than later.
