Paraguayan journalist Roberto Rojas has indicated that Newcastle United do have a chance of signing reported transfer target Miguel Almiron.

The Chronicle reported recently that the Magpies were interested in making an ambitious move to sign the Atlanta United star, who is also chased by Premier League big boys Arsenal and Tottenham, and Rojas has suggested that it could be possible.

“Thank you to all the Newcastle United fans and their kind words regarding Almiron and his future there,” he said on his personal Twitter account.

“Not saying it’s impossible as I think it’s the club where he’ll be a definitive starter but you never know. January should be fun!”

OPINION

This is interesting from Rojas. The Chronicle’s report stated that the player’s agent was in the stands for Newcastle’s victory over Bournemouth last time out, however they also claim that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the midfielder. If those two teams do truly want a piece of Almiron then it’s going to be difficult for the Magpies to bring him to Tyneside. However, as Rojas says, Newcastle is a team where Almiron would be a definite starter week in and week out, so it would make sense in a sporting sense for him to move to St James’ Park rather than one of the Premier League’s big boys. Money talks, though, and it remains eminently possible that Spurs or Arsenal could simply blow Newcastle out of the water when it comes to the Paraguay international. He is someone that Rafael Benitez needs, though, so the club should be doing whatever it takes to bring him to the North East. As Rojas says, you never know.
