Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett is to undergo immediate tests on his injury blow suffered with Wales in a situation which could accelerate the club’s plans to sign a new left back, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim that the Welsh international, a favourite of Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez, has been left sweating over the problem which ruled him out of action for his country and that with the Magpies already looking for a new left back, things could be fast tracked on Tyneside to bring in a new recruit in January.

When fit Dummett has been first choice for the Spanish boss during his time at St James’ Park.

Opinion

Dummett is one of the most underrated players in the Newcastle squad, and his absence is going to hit them hard. There are no other natural, left footed left backs in the entirety of the squad other than the outcast Achraf Lazaar, and you would expect that Rafael Benitez would rather put in a makeshift option than the Moroccan international. A new left back should really have been a priority over the summer window, with the fear that Dummett – as happened last season – was ruled out for an extended period of time. It did not happen and now it seems as though the Magpies are going to pay as a result, with the Welshman’s situation looking bleak. A new signing early in January would not only boost the squad but lift spirits among the fans at St James’ Park, who will not be expecting Mike Ashley to dip into his pocket any time soon.
