OPINION
One thing that has subsequently amused many Manchester United fans is Sir Alex Ferguson’s claim as he put away his stopwatch and oversized coat for the final time that the-then teenage Phil Jones could go on to become one of the club’s greatest-ever players. Now 26 and little more than a fill-in and bit-part player at the club, it is safe to say Jones will never live up to that ludicrous expectation. Jones has spent seven years at Old Trafford and chalked up 195 appearances but he has failed to nail down a regular starting spot in any number of positions despite ample opportunity. With Victor Lindelof out injured, Jones was handed just his third appearance of the season in United’s 1-0 Champions League win against Young Boys on Tuesday night. He played the full 90 minutes alongside Chris Smalling in the centre of defence but a considerable section of supporters were critical of his performance, claiming he lacks the quality to be in the team of an elite club. Given Jones’ limitless clumsiness and propensity for getting injured, there’s a good chance he will soon be back on the sidelines.

In a space of few minutes Fellaini and Jones proved why they are not fit to play for @ManUtd . Nothing personal but they don’t have the quality. Stalling is another one ?? #mufc

That Phil Jones run and cross there just summed up his United career. 100% effort but the outcome is still woeful. #MUFC

Jones with the worst cross I’ve seen in my life. Fitting for this game really. #MUFC
