A number of Manchester City fans have turned to Twitter to rave over the performance of winger Riyad Mahrez in the club’s Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

The Premier League champions welcomed their Ukrainian rivals to the Etihad Stadium looking to solidify their position at the top of their group, and started brightly with a David Silva goal in the opening 15 minutes, the Spaniard turning in Mahrez’s low cross from close range after some silky skills from the Algerian.

The match finished 6-0 and supporters were left delighted with what they saw from their 27-year-old summer signing, taking to social media to celebrate his display, with one fan suggesting he was the missing piece to European success.

COMMENTARY

Mahrez might have taken some time to find his feet at Manchester City but now he has he is working wonders with the ball. The Algerian maestro looks right at home with the other sublime talents that Pep Guardiola has to work with and it was not only his creative flair up front which helped City in their impressive performance but his hard work and dedication to defending. He was often seen chasing opposition players on the ball, trying to pressure them into conceding possession, and that was something which was not seen too often at Leicester City. Fans were absolutely right to be celebrating his display, especially for the opening goal, where his play out on the wing resulted in David Silva being handed one of the easiest goals he will come to score in his career. The future looks seriously bright for City with Mahrez, and it looks like money well spent in summer.
