Manchester City are lining up a move for Columbus Crew and USA goalkeeper Zack Steffen, according to The Sun.

The newspaper report that Pepe Guardiola is stepping up his search for a back-up stopper after Claudio Bravo’s season-ending injury, with Steffen now a prime target for the defending Premier League champions.

The Sun claim that City believe the 23-year-old international is a potential star of the future, and are targeting a £5million deal in January.

It is said that City may have some issues with regards to a work permit, but the club are keen to secure a deal before tackling that situation.

Good move for Manchester City?

Yes.

Steffen is a rising star in MLS and for the USA national side, and the 23-year-old does look like he could be the next big goalkeeper out of the States.

America has a long history of producing goalkeepers of the highest quality, and there is no reason why the 23-year-old could not be the next in line to make a big move to Europe.

A £5million deal looks to be a steal for City as well, who would be bringing in a quality young stopper to play back-up to Ederson.

Likely to happen?

You would think that a move is likely if City do end up submitting a concrete bid for Steffen.

The 23-year-old is sure to be tempted by the chance to play in the Premier League, and the fact it would be for the defending champions and favourites this year makes it even more alluring.

That being said, the youngster will be well aware that his role in Manchester would be as second-choice, and that may put him off considering the regular football he currently gets in MLS.
