If there is one position which Leeds United need to reinforce in January it is at centre-back, where Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper are currently their only two senior options.

A run of bad luck with injuries has followed a lack of recruitment in that position in the summer, leaving Marcelo Bielsa seriously short-changed at the back.

If the Whites are to maintain their push for promotion under the Argentine, then they simply must bring in a centre-back in the upcoming mid-season window.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is prepared to listen to offers for Republic of Ireland international Ciaran Clark, should Florian Lejeune recover in time for January.

With Lejeune’s recovery going well that is likely to happen, and Clark could therefore find himself on the way out of St. James’ Park in a couple of months time.

There will no doubt be several teams interested in the 29-year-old enforcer, and Leeds must be among that number.

Clark has vast experience in the Premier League, as well as a full season in the Championship with the Magpies which puts him in good stead to make an instant impact for the Whites.

A player being able to slot straight into the side will be key for Bielsa, and Clark ticks all the relevant boxes for Leeds as they search for a new centre-back.

While the report does not specify whether Newcastle would be looking to offload Clark on loan or permanently, either deal would suit the Whites.

While a loan may be preferable for now, the 29-year-old is not likely to cost an extortionate amount, and signing him permanently would put them in good stead if they do win promotion to the Premier League.

All in all this is an absolute no-brainer for Leeds, and they must line up a swoop for Clark immediately.
