Rio Ferdinand has drooled over Anthony Martial after Manchester United came from behind to secure a memorable 2-1 Champions League triumph against Juventus on Wednesday night.
The forward, 23, did not get on the scoresheet as a Juan Mata free-kick and Alex Sandro own goal enabled Jose Mourinho’s side to stun the Italian champions in Turin with two goals in the last five minutes.
United legend Ferdinand insisted that Martial had a big role to play in United’s sensational comeback.
“The substitutes and Jose must take huge credit,” Ferdinand told BT Sport’s live coverage in the immediate aftermath of the match. “Martial deserves a special mention, he was United’s best player.”

When it comes to United, Rio knows his onions. He is spot on about the Frenchman The Frenchman, who struggled to get into Mourinho’s line-up at the beginning of the season, but has now firmly established himself at as United’s most potent attacking threat. He has led the team’s recent revival, netting five times in his last four Premier League matches as the giants have climbed up to seventh, just three points off a Champions League spot. Martial did not get on the scoresheet but delivered an impressive all-round display in his 90-minute run-out and is developing into a consistently top-notch operator. With Alexis Sanchez spearheading the attack in place of the injured Romelu Lukaku and axed Marcus Rashford, Martial was on the left flank. He was excellent, providing cutting edge when on the ball and also tracking Juventus right-back Mattia De Sciglio relentlessly as United defended resolutely before Ronaldo’s opener.
