Commons hits out at Snodgrass

|

Sky Sports pundit Kris Commons has slammed Robert Snodgrass for making himself unavailable for Scotland.

The West Ham midfielder has joined Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths and Matt Ritchie, as well as the newly-retired James McArthur, in pulling out of international duty.

Former Scotland playmaker Commons is unimpressed at someone like Snodgrass putting club before country.

“Snodgrass has asked not to be picked due to an apparent ankle knock. But he’s fit enough to have played 15 times for West Ham this season. How does that work?,” Commons told the Scottish Daily Mail.

“I find it strange with Snodgrass. He’s a hugely popular member in the camp. He obviously just doesn’t fancy turning up and maybe not playing every game.”

OPINION

Commons has hit the nail on the head with Snodgrass, and others who have told Alex McLeish ‘thanks, but no thanks’ to playing for Scotland. The West Ham midfielder doesn’t like the idea any more of being on the substitute’s bench watching others play, and the possibility of not being a first choice. Shame on him. A footballer’s career is a short one, and Snodgrass is in the final years of his. Aged 31, the experienced Premier League and Championship campaigner should walk over broken glass to play for Scotland and add to the 26 caps and impressive haul of seven goals he has accumulated. Clearly, his fitness isn’t too much of a problem, as the ex-Leeds United, Norwich City and Hull City man, who spent last season excelling on loan at Aston Villa, has played the full 90 minutes in each of the last four matches for resurgent West Ham. Pull the other one, Robert, and just be honest about why you’re really not playing.
