BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has revealed how impressed he has been by the stunning transformation of Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson.

The left-back delivered the latest in a series of outstanding displays for the Merseyside giants on Sunday as they cruised to a 2-0 Premier League win against Fulham at Anfield.

Roberton played the full 90 minutes of the match and assisted the second goal, which was superbly dispatched at the back post by Xherdan Shaqiri.

“This lad has come a long way since his days of playing in front of a few hundred people at Queen’s Park,” Crooks told the BBC Sport site, as he named Robertson in his team of the week.

“Robertson has come through the ranks the hard way, also playing for Dundee United and Hull City before joining Liverpool and making a name for himself.

“I’m not entirely sure his left foot is as good as 1970s Liverpool legend Alec Lindsay’s but the cross he provided for Xherdan Shaqiri to score looked pretty special.”

OPINION

What a journey Robertson has made in his career after being released by Celtic in his teens. Many youngsters would have buckled or lost interest, but the left-back has demonstrated great resilience and strength of character to bounce back. Following a difficult start to life at Anfield, when he played second fiddle to Alberto Moreno and couldn’t even get in the matchday squad most of the time, Robertson is now one of Jurgen Klopp’s most trusted men. It is a measure of his standing that the 24-year-old has played the full 90 minutes in 11 of Liverpool’s 12 Premier League matches this season and started all four of their Champions League fixtures. He is a solid and razor-sharp defender, and his romping raids up the left flank are crucial to his side’s style of play. Robertson’s assist against Fulham was his fifth in all competitions this season. Benjamin Mendy and Kieran Trippier are widely hailed as the best attacking full-backs in the league. Liverpool’s super Scot is as good as both going forward, and far better defensively.
