Ally McCoist has been blown away by the possibility of Rangers signing Liverpool forward Dominic Solanke in the January transfer window.

The Scottish Sun has reported that Steven Gerrard will have a go at signing the 21-year-old on loan in the winter window in a bid to replace Umar Sadiq.

Solanke has not kicked a ball for Liverpool this season so there is a good chance that he will be available on loan, and Ibrox legend McCoist believes that be would be a superb addition to Gerrard’s squad for the second half of the season.

“It would be a massive coup,” McCoist said on Scottish Football Extra on BT Sport 1 on Saturday morning. “I think he scored two in midweek [for England’s Under-21s].

“That would be a top, top signing if we managed to get him.”

OPINION

McCoist is spot on here because Solanke would seriously challenge Alfredo Morelos for a spot in Gerrard’s starting line-up. The one-time England international probably wouldn’t be able to oust Morelos straight away, but his presence in the squad is bound to get the Colombian to up his game even more. Right now, Morelos’ spot in the starting line-up is a given. Kyle Lafferty has blown hot and cold since his return to Ibrox and Sadiq has been a complete flop. Solanke has played well for England’s Under-21s and Liverpool’s Under-23s this season but he needs first team football. It would be in Liverpool’s best interest to send him out on loan but the Gers could face competition for his signature in January. It is likely that some Premier League and English Championship clubs could also want the ex-Chelsea striker. He may prefer to play for a team in England, which would be a blow for the Light Blues.
