Legendary Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler has predicted that Newcastle United will avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

Rafa Benitez’s men were without a win all season until they picked up the maximum points in each of their last two outings.

However Mike Ashley’s lack of funding and lack of strength in depth could see the Magpies remain in the mix for a return to the Championship next year.

Tyler believes that Newcastle have enough about themselves to stay up though, claiming that Benitez will somehow manage to secure a top-17 finish.

“I am sure Newcastle will stay up. They have one of the most experienced managers in the business. I have been lucky enough to spend time in the past with Rafa Benitez and he will find a way, as the last two results have shown,” he said on the Sky Sports website in a Q&A session [12:49pm].

OPINION

Newcastle have done well to win their last two games and they deserve to be praised. However the fact remains that the Magpies are going to be a team that will still be fighting to avoid relegation by the end of the season. They did brilliantly in the second half of last season to ensure they stayed well clear of the bottom three, but is the squad now better than it was then? If anything, other teams have improved and Newcastle have stood still which is a major issue in the Premier League. Stoke, West Brom and Swansea were three established Premier League teams but failed to progress and were relegated last term. Newcastle could easily fall into that category unless Ashley frees up some funds in January. Newcastle could do with new players in pretty much every single position because at the moment, there are clubs in the Championship which better squads on paper than the Magpies. If Benitez keeps the team up without making changes in January, he is without doubt one of the best managers in the world.
