While there might have been a notable lack of transfer business conducted by Tottenham Hotspur over the summer window there were still some hugely significant deals being completed.

The Lilywhites might have invoked the rage of the supporters by not making a single capture but they did manage to get some signatures on paper in the form of new and improved contracts for their biggest and brightest figures.

Davinson Sanchez, Harry Kane and manager Mauricio Pochettino were those to commit their futures over the summer and Dele Alli followed suit during the season to tie down some of their top stars.

One man who looks to be next in Daniel Levy’s sights – the Tottenham chief firmly in charge when it comes to contracts in north London – is Christian Eriksen, the Danish playmaker currently with a contract that runs until 2020.

However, the attacking midfielder has lifted the lid on the numerous talks which have been taking place, and his response will leave Levy sweating.

He told BT.DK: I have my agent to take care of it so I can focus on playing soccer. Then we see in the end where it ends. There have been talks with Tottenham many times. I can not say if it’s just over. You must ask them.

“I have not felt that they will throw me out yet (he said jokingly). One is a business for the club, but that’s not something I’ve been thinking about.”

If Eriksen is not thinking about his future at Tottenham, then are these contract talks a waste of time right now?

He surely knows the path he wants to take in order to reach the top of the sport, but appearing so nonplussed about whether he wants to tie himself down with Spurs is not going to help Levy sleep at night.

Yes, it could be that he simply wants to focus on his football and leave the negotiations to his agent but speaking out about the vast number of talks shows that Spurs are not yet in a position to seal a deal.

Why Tottenham cannot meet his – or his agent’s – demands, only those behind closed doors will know, but heading into the final 18 months of his deal, things do not look certain for Eriksen to follow his teammates – a real worry for Levy, Mauricio Pochettino and everyone at the club.
